Google Announces Changes to Places Pages

Local searchers and local businesses will see a fairly substantially different Place Page the next time they’re poking around Google Maps/Places. The company announceda new look Thursday and promises more changes to come.

The new layout of Place Pages puts a heavy emphasis on reviews. More specifically, it emphasizes reviews from Google users and no longer shows review content from third party sites. (Google had issues with both Yelp and TripAdvisor over review snippets last year, you may recall.)

Rather than showing external reviews, the new Place Page only links to third party sites after showing a selection of Google user reviews. The review emphasis is also obvious with not one, but two cherry red “Write a review” buttons. Here’s a look at an example Place Page with Google’s new look-and-feel. There is a wealth of information about used cars on the Internet: enter “used car” as the key words and you’ll find additional information on how to buy a used car, detailed instructions for conducting a pre-purchase inspection, and ads for cars available for sale, among other information. Libraries and book stores also have publications that compare car models, options, and costs, and offer information about frequency-of-repair records, safety tests, and mileage. Many of these publications have details on the do’s and don’ts of buying a used car.

Shifting a Job Search into High Gear at WSU Oakland Center!

The Defense Employment Transition Program (DETP) is a FREE comprehensive re-employment
program specically focused on the defense sector. This unique program oers foundational skills for the
professional in transition and is highly customized to meet each individual’s needs.
Participants have the opportunity to pick and choose which parts of the 10-week program are relevant for
their needs. The components of the DETP include:

• Individual Personality, Professional Interests and Workplace Skills Assessments
• Personal Strategic Employment Plan
• Professional One-on-One Coaching
• Education Workshops and Hands-On Clinics
• Mock Interviewing

This is a free program open to Michigan residents that are unemployed or underemployed – you do not
need to be a recipient of unemployment benets to qualify for this program. The DETP was developed by Wayne State University and is funded in partnership with Macomb Community College and the Department of Labor.The program begins with a half-day orientation session that describes each of the above components in more detail and provides an opportunity for participants to ask questions.

10:00    Decorated Bicycle Parade for ages 3 ~ 4, 5 ~ 7, and 8 ~11. Have Fun in the Decorated Bike Parade!   Use your imagination and decorate your bike like your favorite sport or sports team. Join us at the parking lot by the Community Building at 10:00 a.m. sharp to show everyone your creativity, and celebrate by riding your decorated bike in the parade around the park! Detroit Tigers mascot Paws will cheer everybody on and be available for pictures! Fun prizes will be awarded for the best bikes!

11:30    Pie Eating Contest  Bring your sweet tooth!  Event held at the picnic pavilion at 11:30.  No registration needed.

12:30    Inflatable Boat Races  Can you handle this Survivor Challenge? ~ Inflatable dinghies will be paddled off the beach by teams of two children or one adult and one child.  Register your name and age before 12:00 at the information tent.  Sorry, no late registration at the beach.  Registered racers, meet at the beach at 12:30 and get ready for some fun. Ribbons will be awarded to the winners of each heat.

1:00 ~ 4:00    Face Painting  available for kids of all ages. ~ On the grass between snack house and beach.  Just show up and wear your smile!

2:30    The Yellow Duckies Race  Over 300 rubber duckies will be dumped into the lake at the beach to race ashore.  Will your number match the first, second, third or last ducky to come ashore?  If so, you will win a Rubber Ducky Trophy!  The cost is $3.00 to race one ducky or $5.00 for two (yours to keep after the race). Buy your ducky at the information tent by 2:00.

3:30    Sand Castle Contest  Be at the beach at 3:15 to receive your number with judging at 4:00. New this year–two categories: Families and Kids-Only!  Register by 3:15 pm at the beach to receive your entry number.

4:30 ~ 5:00    Pie baking contest   One of the most popular events from years’ past! Register at the information table and then bring your pie to the pavilion at 4:30 for judging.  Refrigeration available if needed in the community center. After the judging, pies will be shared with the community unless otherwise requested.

3:30 ~ 5:00    Picnic table decoration contest  Tables will be judged on their creativity and patriotic theme. No need to register, but to enter, make sure that your name identifies your table entry for judging which starts at 4:30pm.

4:30 ~ 5:30    Children’s games  Games at the grassy point near the gazebo.  No registration needed.

7:00 ~ Dusk    Concert   As the evening approaches, park guests will enjoy a concert sponsored by the City of Grosse Pointe Farms.  The great sounds from the band Soul Provider will be heard!

6:00 ~ 8:00    Glow Stick and Novelty Sale  throughout the park–sales support the Grosse Pointe Farms Boat Club.

Dusk    Fireworks Display  The highlight of the evening!!  Presented by the City of Grosse Pointe Farms.

The Rivers retirement community unanimously OK’d by Woods City Council

Developers of The Rivers of Grosse Pointe, a continuing care retirement community on the site of the closed Children’s Home of Detroit, cleared their final hurdle Monday night (June 6), with the unanimous approval of the project by the Grosse Pointe Woods City Council.

Project developer Richard Levin spoke to a larger-than-average council audience about the anticipation he’s heard from residents. “We’ve received six calls from people already asking how soon they can take the unit they’re looking for,” he said. “We’d like to get started as soon as we can.”

Council members responded with ample support for the plan for the Cook Road site.

“I’m surprised it’s only six,” council member Vicki Granger said. “I look forward to this starting ASAP.”

Gene Tutag, head of the Woods’ building department, gave a lengthy presentation outlining the details of the project, which will fill the 16-acre site with freestanding condo-cottages, assisted-living units and a 100-bed nursing unit. The city has been in discussion with developers for the project since October 2009, he said.

“A CCRC is a special category of senior housing,” Tutag said. “They offer two or more types of senior housing.”

The mix of living spaces is intended to offer a vast array of options and care for seniors as they age.

Levin said the developers would prefer to have 12 months to begin construction, while Mayor Robert Novitke asked for groundbreaking in 90 days. “If we agree to that (90 days) and we can’t comply, then the project would fail,” Levin said. “I think an outside date of 12 months is fair.”

The potential consequences of increased traffic, vacant rooms and slow sales in a still-lackluster economy were overridden by anecdotal support from residents.

“I have a really strong feeling about this project for personal reasons,” said Mary Rose Nelson, a lifelong resident of Grosse Pointe Woods, who spoke of her own mother. “It breaks my heart I have no place to put her.”

In other business, the council gave recognition to Eagle Scout William David Rochte. “This is obviously a great pleasure,” Novitke said. “You reflect so wonderfully on the city of Grosse Pointe Woods.”

Rochte has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past two years and maintained a 4.0 GPA. He’ll attend Michigan State University with pre-med plans.

GROSSE POINTE THEATRE OFFERING CHILDREN’S PLAYWRITING AND PERFORMING WORKSHOP THIS SUMMER

For two weeks in July this year, Grosse Pointe Theatre will be creating young playwrights in a summer workshop focused on beginning playwriting – especially writing fractured fairy tales.

The two-week program (mornings only) will start on Monday, July 11, and run through Friday, July 22. Students who are available will be performing their works as part of the Fairy Tale Festival to be held at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House on Saturday, July 23. The daily sessions run from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and take place at the theatre’s Rehearsal Hall at 315 Fisher Road at Maumee.

As part of the theatre’s Youth on Stage program, this workshop is intended for youngsters who have completed grades 5, 6, 7 and 8. The first week will deal with the basics of playwriting and the second week will study fairy tales and writing and performing Fractured Fairy Tales the students have written. Surrounding all of these activities will be improv exercises and theatre games to increase the student’s general knowledge of theatre and stagecraft.

“We think we have planned an exciting curriculum for the kids and that they will learn some skills that will serve them throughout life. We are particularly looking for adventurous children who have creative minds and already know how to think outside the box,” said Mary Lou Britton, executive producer for the summer workshop. “The process of “fracturing” fairy tales encourages the students to think about different perspectives and changed endings for the fairy tales we all knew growing up.”

Fees for the two-week experience are $275 for children or grandchildren of GPT members; $300 for others.

Youth on Stage, in its 11^th year of successful operation, is an educational opportunity for children and teens to learn about theatre and stagecraft. It offers two semester-long programs during the school year, ending each session with a full-stage production at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial.

New Management Team at Toledo Beach Marina Looks Forward to Upgrades Focusing on Customers

The Toledo Beach Marina is excited to announce that the veteran marina management team led by Semo Post and Pam Poirier of Jefferson Beach Marina will now also be managing the Toledo Beach Marina.

“The Toledo Beach Marina has been a wonderful facility in previous years and has the potential to be one of the most exciting boating destinations in the area,” said Post, general manager. “We are thrilled to begin realizing the possibilities for this remarkable attraction.”

The marina has an unparalleled location on Lake Erie between Detroit and Toledo and near the Lake Erie Islands region, 250 acres of beautiful surrounding green space, and more than 600 docks in a protected deep-water harbor. Other amenities include drive up parking, year round 24-hour security, modern bath house, laundry, deli, Ship’s Store and 30′ x 50′ pool.

Before joining Jefferson Beach Marina, Post spent 12 years as marina manager at Harbor Hill Marina, where he also implemented key improvements. The Grosse Pointe Farms resident started his marina career as harbor attendant at the Detroit Yacht Club in 1985, quickly moving up to harbor master. He has a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University.

Poirier served as harbor and park supervisor at Grosse Pointe Farms Pier Park for 12 years before joining Jefferson Beach Marina. She has been a member of the Grosse Pointe Power Squadron for 15 years and was its first female executive board member. A resident of Grosse Pointe Farms, she has a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University.
